Promoters of social development
Social investment
Azucarera El Viejo works hand in hand with the nearby communities, as it is not possible to be successful unless we contribute with the social and economic development of our neighbors.
Projects are being currently developed in the communities of Corralillos, La Guinea, Bolsón and Ortega to work on education, civil safety, water, microenterprises, environment and health. Inside these main topics, different initiatives are developed that meet community needs previously validated in consultation processes with community leaders in monthly meetings. Some of those initiatives are:
Main projects
Drinking water for the communities: Guanacaste is one of the areas of the country where the issue of water is particularly sensitive. Climate change and the dependency on artisanal wells by our communities impels us to work hard on this issue.
Azucarera El Viejo seeks public-private partnerships that allow the development of projects that guarantee access to drinking water in quantity and quality for our neighboring communities.
As Promoters of Social Development, we will continue working to improve accessibility to water resources in the communities near the company.
Community Safety: as a responsible company, we want our neighbors to live in safe communities. Among the programs we develop along with the neighbors of nearby communities, we have the one on road control, consisting of measuring the speed of vehicles passing through the community during harvest times, with the prupose of protecting the life of collaborators and the community and educating on responsible driving.
Microenterprise Program: As Promoters of Social and Economic Development, we offer a helping hand to the people of the community who want to develop their own business.
The main projects that have been developed are:
- Financial support for projects: We have supported several initiatives with interest-free microcredits, among them, projects in craft manufacturing, handmade costume jewelry, bakeries, hydroponic farming, and others.
- Skill Generation Workshops: Every year, we offer to the community workshops that seek to promote the entrepreneurial spirit and to improve their exercise. Between 40 and 45 community members take part in these events every year, which are offered in alliance with INA [initials in Spanish for National Learning Institute].
Management of environmental programs: Through this initiative, we promote environmental sustainability projects such as the blue flag for our communities, carbon neutrality programs, water harvesting projects, and others.
Community commitment and values formation program: With this initiative, we were able to have more than 170 children join the most successful scouts group in the country, the one with the second largest membership in Costa Rica. By means of play activities, every week dozens of children receive workshops, talks, and recreation time that allow us to reinforce values such as loyalty, commitment, excellence, honesty and respect, among many others.
