Electric power
In the 90 Azucarera El Viejo became the first mill in Central America to develop an electricity cogeneration project at commercial level with biomass.
The energy generated by Azucarera El Viejo comes from the fiber waste of bagasse, which is obtained when the sugarcane juice is extracted.
With the use of bagasse, burning environment-polluting fossil fuels is not necessary, and it is a solution for waste management.
Because sustainability is very important for the company, the generation of electrical power using bagasse is a priority.
17MW of the clean energy generated is sold to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, which represents 2% of the country’s total power consumption.
The company uses the remainder of the energy produced in the mill and in field irrigation.
The company’s cogeneration of electricity from biomass serves over 30,000 homes. This production based on clean energies takes place in the dry season, which is vital for the environment and for its sustainability, due to the lack of rain during that period.
