Promoters of economic development
Production data
Azucarera El Viejo is a Costa Rican agroindustrial company that produces 1,800,000 50Kg sacks of sugar per year, which corresponds to 22.7% of the national production.
Azucarera El Viejo, as a Promoter of Economic Development, works day after day on implementing the best management practices in the production of sugarcane.
The company owns 8.841 hectares and rents 3.721 more, which are all used for sugarcane sowing. In addition to this amount, the mill receives the production of 249 farmers from the basin of the Tempisque River, which is equivalent to 3.766 additional hectares.
Parallel to the production of sugar, Azucarera El Viejo generates clean energy using the fiber waste of bagasse, which is obtained from the extraction of the sugarcane juice.
By using bagasse, we avoid burning fossil fuels that contaminate the environment, and it is a solution for waste management.
17MW of the clean energy generated is sold to the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity. The remainder of the energy produced is used by the company in the mill and for field irrigation.
We are currently the largest mill in Costa Rica. We try to have our growth go hand in hand with the best environmental, social and economic practices, and thereby to become Promoters of Development for the province of Guanacaste.
